Ella in Sri
Lanka’s highlands is the perfect place for a little adventure travel as
you can hike the hills for days on end. Trails lead you through tea
plantations and dense forest paths. The highest peak in the area offer
great panoramic views.
Ella,
(meaning water fall in Sinhalese) aptly named in the backdrop of
numerous waterfalls, small & large, which crash, gush or trickle
down the mountainous terrain, is a beguiling village sitting tight &
pretty at the southern ridge of the Central highlands of salubrious
climate. Village is nestled in a magnificent valley peering straight
through the opening amongst an idyllic green mountain ranges, right down
to the coastal plain nearly 1000m below, & over to the coast. On a
clear night, you can view the Kirinda lighthouse, which is 77 km far.
The views in Ella are stunning with gorgeous jungle and tea estates.
Ella Rock
Ella
Rock, Little Adam's Peak, a pyramid-shaped rock which stands opposite
the far larger Ella Rock and offers marvelous views out over the hills
The walk makes a very pleasant morning's excursion, and is fairly gentle
and largely flat, apart from a small amount of climbing near the end.
Count on around two hours return and go as early as possible before the
clouds set in.
Rawana Falls

Ella is a waterfall in the village of Uduhawara, in Badulla district,
Sri Lanka. It is located approximately 12 km (7.5 mi) from Welimada
town.
Temples
and caves are plenty and ready to be discovered in Ella and do not miss
to visit the Handapangoda Elephant sanctuary too.
Demodara Railway Station
Demodara
is the most popular and interesting railway station of Sri
Lanka,located close to Badulla town. Specialties of Demodara are
Demodara 9 Arc Bridge, Demodara Tunnel, Demodara Railway Station,
Demodara tea Estates and so on. It is the one and only railway station
where trains travel in the same horizontal level. There is a railway
tunnel downside of the Demodara Railway station. The train comes through
the tunnel and after travel about 400m gap which round way then comes
to Station.
Nine arcs Stone Bridge
This
viaduct was built at Gotuwala between the two railway stations - Ella
and Demodara during the British Colonial period is the largest in Sri
Lanka. Located almost 3100 feet above the sea level, this 99.6ft high
bridge is called "Ahas namaye palama" (Nine skies bridge) in Sinhala.
When one stands underneath it and looks up there is a beautiful sight of
'nine skies' through the nine arches, hence the Sinhala name. This
bridge is also called 'The Bridge in the sky' due to the sheer hight.
The bridge is built entirely of solid rocks, bricks and cement without using a single piece of steel.

Wooden Bridge of Ella
There
is a temple belong to the King Walagamba era with caves and ancient
frescoes. The bridge is the only wooden Bridge in Sri Lanka with a roof
above, which belongs to the Kandy era. The
bridge has been built by placing 03 huge logs from Bogoda Ancient
Temple across Gallanda stream. Either side of the bridge, there are 11
pairs of carved rails (Palisades). The roofing is done with Sinhala flat
tiles. The timber is painted with a liquid made by an old recipe. The
most significant feature of this bridge is that it has been built
without using any nail.
Canoeing at Samanala Wewa also is available for those who are interested.
